Microbiology & Culture Tests in Visakhapatnam
Identifying the bacteria or fungi behind an infection – and the antibiotics that will work against it.
About microbiology at SMS Diagnostics
Medical microbiology identifies the microorganisms – bacteria, fungi and parasites – that cause infection. Culture and sensitivity (C&S) testing grows the organism from your sample and then tests which antibiotics are effective against it. This helps your doctor choose the right treatment, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and fight the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.
SMS Diagnostics, Visakhapatnam handles microbiology investigations for urinary infections, wound and pus infections, respiratory infections and more. Because microbiology results depend heavily on how the sample is collected, our staff provide sterile containers and clear collection instructions to every patient.

- Long-standing cough, especially with sputum or weight loss
- Persistent diarrhoea, particularly with fever or blood
- Fungal skin or nail infections not settling with treatment
How to prepare
- Give the sample before starting antibiotics whenever possible – antibiotics can prevent organisms from growing.
- If you are already on antibiotics, tell our staff the name and start date.
- Urine culture: clean the area, discard the first stream and collect mid-stream urine in the sterile container provided.
- Sputum: collect deep-cough sputum (not saliva) early in the morning after rinsing the mouth with water.
- Return samples to the lab promptly; delays can affect culture accuracy.
Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or our laboratory staff.

Frequently asked questions
Tap a question to see the answer.
How long does a urine culture report take?
Culture tests need time for organisms to grow and be tested against antibiotics. A culture report usually takes longer than routine tests, typically 48–72 hours. Contact us for the expected timing.
Why should the sample be given before antibiotics?
Antibiotics can suppress bacterial growth, which may give a falsely negative culture. Collecting the sample first gives the most reliable result.
What is antibiotic sensitivity testing?
Once an organism is grown, it is tested against a panel of antibiotics to see which are effective (sensitive) and which are not (resistant). This guides your doctor's choice of treatment.
What is the difference between a urine routine test and urine culture?
A urine routine test (CUE) looks for signs of infection such as pus cells, while a urine culture identifies the exact organism and the antibiotics it responds to.
Do you test sputum for tuberculosis?
Sputum AFB staining is used as part of TB evaluation. Please contact us to confirm availability and collection instructions.
